The One We Praise

Psalm 145:11-21

They tell of the glory of your kingdom
and speak of your might,
so that all people may know of your mighty acts
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures through all generations.

The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises
and faithful in all he does.[b]
The Lord upholds all who fall
and lifts up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food at the proper time.
You open your hand
and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

The Lord is righteous in all his ways
and faithful in all he does.
The Lord is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.
He fulfills the desires of those who fear him;
he hears their cry and saves them.
The Lord watches over all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.

My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord.
Let every creature praise his holy name
for ever and ever.

Devotion

In this section of Psalm 145, David focuses on God’s Glory, His Kingdom, His Power and His Mighty Acts. This is a continuation of the themes we saw in verses one through ten. Once again, David is sharing more of the reasons why God is worthy of praise. Everything concludes in verse twenty-one with the reaffirmation of David’s determination to praise God, and the expression of his desire that all creation should join in the anthem.

So, from this psalm we have learned that our praise of Almighty God should be intentional, continual, focused, and deeply personal. Our praise of God will coincide with God’s activity in our world and in our lives. God’s Majesty, His Might and His Mercy have been seen throughout human history and are still seen in the world today. So even when we don’t feel like praising Him, it is good and appropriate to do so.

Questions to Ponder:

As you think about God’s character today, which one of His divine attributes are you most thankful for? As you think about God’s activity today, which of His acts is most worthy of praise? Now take a moment out of your day to write an anthem of praise highlighting God’s character and His activity.

Prayer Points

  • Ask God to help you write an anthem of praise, which highlights God’s character and His activity.
  • Thank the LORD for His ______________ in your life. (Some examples might be: sustaining power, shepherding heart, healing, protection, help, etc.)
  • Google names, attributes and character of God. Spend some time reading the names of God and this will help you to focus on His character in your time of praise.
  • Start noting in your bible every time God’s name is mentioned. Ask and pray that this journey of “knowing Him” will remain strong and steady and that You will also make Him known!

Suggested Prayer
Your Kingdom, oh God, has no end. You are majestic, glorious, wonderful, perfect, merciful, forgiving, just, right, defender, victorious warrior, advocate, conquering king, savior, friend, banner over me is love. You are the God who see’s and hears. You answer when I call out to You. You rescue, redeem and restore. You provide air to breathe, water to drink and You satisfy me and Your church with Yourself. Who can I compare You to, oh God? There is none like You! Come LORD, captivate my heart afresh with Your gracious and merciful love! Here I am LORD. I ask that you love on me, minister to me. I ask that You help me to set You ever before me and that Your praise will ever be on my lips. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
