A Discipline of Praise

June 2, 2020

Psalm 145:2

Every day I will praise you
and extol your name for ever and ever.

Matthew 21:15-16

But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.

“Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.

“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,

“‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?”

Devotion

In verse two, David is very specific. He sings, “Every day I will praise you.” Here we see the importance of continuity in our praise of Almighty God. This shows us David’s commitment to express the accolades of God each day. This was an important part of David’s spiritual disciplines. We don’t often think about praising God as a spiritual discipline. After today, my prayer is that it will become an important part of your daily spiritual disciplines.

In 1996, Christian artist Carman wrote the song Praise Him. The refrain goes like this: “Praise Him, praise Him, praise Him in the morning, praise Him in the noontime, praise Him, praise Him, praise Him when the sun goes down.” This is a simple little chorus that is easy to remember. Once you hear the tune, you will find yourself whistling the music often. More importantly, it will be a reminder of the importance of praising God each day for who He is and what He’s done!

Questions to Ponder:

Is praising God each day a part of your daily spiritual disciplines? What are you specifically praising God for today?

Prayer Points

  • Pray that the Holy Spirit will empower you to make a habit of praise throughout your day.
  • Pray that God would allow your first response to the situations you go through to be praise.
  • Pray that we as a church would praise God daily for ALL things.

Suggested Prayer
Lord of all creation, the birds sing songs of worship to You, the leaves from the trees clap their “hands”, and the waves from the ocean resound with rippling roars. All of creation DECLARES YOUR glory and beauty, oh God! How much more should I declare Your beauty, majesty and power! Thank You LORD that You are not in the objects of Your creation such as trees, BUT you are in ME! Even the parts of your creation that don’t have your Spirit praise Your name. How much more should I pour out my heart with praise, adoration, love and affection. Make me like David, who was willing to praise You in every season of the soul. Set my gaze on You, give me eyes to see YOU as You really are, that I may lay prostrate before You, trembling at Your Word, adoring You, revering You. In the Name of Jesus Christ, I ask these things. Amen.
