John 4:15-26

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” He told her, “Go,
call your husband and come back.” “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is Jerusalem.” Jesus declared, “Believe Me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and now has come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks. God is Spirit, and His worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.” The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ)”is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am He.”

Devotion

Once again, we see that the Samaritan woman did not understand the type of water that Jesus was offering. Jesus now delves deeper into an issue that lies at the heart of this woman’s inability to understand what He is talking about. He addresses her need for this “living water” by causing her to consider her own sinfulness and depravity. Once He goes there, she changes the subject to religion. We all do this to avoid dealing with heart issues! Then Jesus clearly identifies Himself as the Messiah; the true Water of Life! Now she knows who He is and that He is the One who forgives and gives eternal life.

The Big Question

Have you ever changed the subject to religion to avoid real heart issues? What did Jesus want the Samaritan woman to know about Himself and His offer of living water? Jesus was able to go right to the real issue which was her sin. What can we learn from Jesus method here? What does it mean to speak the truth in love? Jesus cared enough about this woman to speak truth to her. Who has God placed in your life that needs to hear the truth concerning “living water”?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
