John 1:1-4, 10-14

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. He came to that which was His own, but His own did not receive Him. Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. Children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Devotional

The Gospel of John was penned by “the beloved disciple” who was one of Jesus’ three closest disciples and lived the longest. His portrait has the most original material and has the most beautiful depictions of Jesus. He stated his gospel’s intent at the end of his account. “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name” (20:30-31). John presents Jesus as “the Eternal Word” of God. He begins his gospel with the Jesus before Jesus. He writes of Jesus before His earthly birth. Jesus is clearly seen as being with God throughout eternity and being the active agent in creation. This Jesus then took on flesh and entered into human history to reveal God to us.

The Big Question

How did the Jesus before Jesus message impact you the weekend of October 6-7th? Did you learn anything from this message that changed how you view Jesus? How does it make you feel to know that the Eternal Son of God left His throne in glory to come to this earth that He might reconcile you to God?

Conclude your time in prayer and silence reflecting on what God revealed to you today.
