All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.'”
When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel.
David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.

Devotion
About 15 years after he was anointed by Samuel to be king (1 Samuel 16), David takes the throne of Judah when Saul dies. He finally becomes the king of all of Israel after the death of Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth. Even though God had promised years earlier that he would be king over all Israel, David spent many years fleeing from Saul, hiding in the wilderness, and waiting for God to fulfill that promise.
The Bible gives many examples of God’s servants waiting for Him to take action in their lives. For example, Abraham and Sarah waited 25 years for the promised heir, Moses waited 40 years for God to bring about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, and Paul waited many years before beginning to fulfill his mission of being the Apostle to the Gentiles.
