2 Kings 9:30-33

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

Then Jehu went to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard about it, she painted her eyes, arranged her hair and looked out the window. As Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, Zimri, you murderer of your master?” He looked up at the window and called out, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two eunuchs looked down at him. “Throw her down!” Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot.

They brought the sacred stone out of the temple of Baal and burned it. They demolished the sacred stone of Baal and tore down the temple of Baal, and people have used it as a latrine to this day. So Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel.

Devotion

After Ahab’s death, Jezebel continued as queen. As Elijah prophesied, Jezebel would be killed and her body devoured by dogs. Thus, the woman who sought to eradicate Yahweh from Israel was herself eradicated in the most despicable way. Furthermore, the god Baal that she sought to enshrine in Israel was also thoroughly eradicated by Jehu. The story of Ahab and Jezebel is a sad account of a wicked couple who used their power for evil. The fact is that God affirms that we all have potential for evil and for good.

The Big Question

What will it take in your life to grow in God’s character so that you handle other people and opportunities with faith, courage and respect like the prophet Elijah? How are you impacted by God’s unbelievable GRACE and MERCY toward Ahab? How have you been warned or inspired by this historical account?

Spend some time in prayer meditating on what God revealed to you through His Word today.
