2 Chronicles 32:18-22

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

Then they called out in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to terrify them and make them afraid in order to capture the city. They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world—the work of men’s hands. King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out in prayer to heaven about this. And the Lord sent an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men and the leaders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he went into the temple of his god, some of his sons cut him down with the sword. So the Lord saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all others. He took care of them on every side.

Devotion

It was in years 4-6 of Hezekiah’s reign that the Northern Kingdom of Israel was invaded and completely destroyed by the Assyrians, with the entire population being deported. Hezekiah led the South ans they witnessed the end of the North. Hezekiah’s biggest challenge came in his 14th year, when Sennacherib king of Assyria invaded Judah. Sennacherib sent his army to destroy Hezekiah and Jerusalem. With the support of the prophet Isaiah, Hezekiah was able to lean into the Lord. This great victory of the Lord was the high point of Hezekiah’s reign, showing that as was his name, so was his experience: God is my strength.

The Big Question

In this text, we see Hezekiah’s deep dependence during the great crisis of Sennacherib’s invasion. We also see his dependence on the voice of God, through Isaiah the prophet. Who do you turn to in a crisis? God brings/allows crises in our lives to test us, to see which way our hearts will turn. Who/what is your strength?

Spend some time in prayer meditating on what God revealed to you today.
