1 Kings 19:9-10

Spend time in prayer and silence with God asking Him to meet with you and speak to you.

Bible Reading

The Lord said to him, “Elijah, what are you doing here?” Elijah replied, “I have zealously served the Lord God Almighty. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed every one of your prophets. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

– 1 Kings 19:9-10

Devotion

Elijah felt like he had expended his zeal with no effect; that the people were successfully rejecting the rule of God over their lives; that he was the only one left that had a heart for God; and that Jezebel would be successful in tracking him down and killing him. Here he is expressing defeat, hopelessness and isolation. All this after one of the greatest victories in the history of the world! Notice God’s question to Elijah; what are you doing here? God knew Elijah’s heart! Elijah was not yet aware of what was going on inside his own heart.

The Big Question

You can’t heal what you don’t allow yourself to feel. God helped Elijah to name is painful emotions before He set about providing remedies. We so often try to bury our painful emotions of grief, sadness, anger, and despair, etc. Burying painful emotions is not the answer. Instead we need to bring our emotions into the light of God’s presence and love. Are you feeling defeated, hopeless, or isolated today? Are you bringing your emotions into the light of God’s presence and love?

Spend some time in prayer meditating on what God revealed to you through His Word today?
